CIGARETTES FOR PRISONERS
FREE ISSUE STOPPED IN GERMANY PARALLEL ACTION TAKEN BY BRITAIN [British Official Wireless] (Rec., 12.20 p.m.) Rugby, May 15. Information having been received that Germany has discontinued the free issue of cigarettes to British prisoners of war, the War Office in consequence has taken parallel action where German prisoners of war are concerned. This does not mean, however, that parcels of tobacco and cigarettes despatched from Britain are not reaching prisoners in Germany. There is much evidence that parcels are getting through quite regularly. Prisoners are also able to purchase cigarettes at the camp canteens, but obviously the quality is by no means the same.
