SHIPMENT OF CLOTHING TO BRITAIN AMERICAN RED CROSS WORK [British Official Wireless] Rugby, May 13. The shipment of £1,250,000 worth of clothing for British civilian victims of the war will be started immediately by the American Red Cross, according to an announcement by the American Ambassador, Mr Winant. This amount will fill the estimated needs during the coming six months and provide reserves for winter on the basis of requests made by the Women’s Voluntary Services for Civil Defence. Much of this clothing will be produced by 500,000 volunteer women workers in the United States. Mr Norman H. Davis, Chairman of the American Red Cross in Washington, recently asked these volunteers to cut, sew and knit 6,000,000 garments during the coming winter. In addition to its own relief supplies the American Red Cross has agreed to provide shipping facilities for £250,000 worth of clothing to be furnished by the British War Relief organisation, said Mr Winant. These goods will also be consigned directly to the Women’s Voluntary Services for distribution to children aged from three months to sixteen years old. There will be 250,000 pairs of shoes for these youngsters. Jumpers, skirts, stockings, pyjamas and nightdresses are among the 107,500 items for women and there will be 100,000 pairs of women’s shoes. Men victims will be provided with garments and shoes and there will also be blankets and other necessities.
