* CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES ELECTIONS ON SATURDAY I SOME PERSONAL NOTES The following are some personal notes on the candidates for office on the Nelson City Council in the elections to be held on Saturday. (The names are given in alphabetical order) : DR. S. A. GIBBS Dr S A. Gibbs, who has been a j councillor for the past 18 years, is at | present a member of the Finance and Administration Committee the Gas and Electricity Committee, the Bylaws, Traffic and Transport Committee. Abattoir Committee and Town Planning Committee. He is president of the Automobile Association (Nelson! which position he has held for 19 years, and is a past president of the South Island Motor Union. He is an active member of the Nelson Provincial Progress League and Nelson Chamber of Commerce Dr. Gibbs is a past president of the Nelson branch of the British Medical Association and has occupied the position of New Zealand president. MR J. A. HARLEY Mr J. A. Harley was born in Nelson, being a member of a well-known family. After leaving Nelson College he served his apprenticeship at the Anchor Foundry. He was on active service in the Great War from 1915 to 1918 and gained a commission He took over the management of Messrs Harley and Sons’ brewery in 1920 Mr Harley is a past president of the Nelson Rotary Club and is on the executive of the Nelson Automobile Association. Mr Harley has served for two terms on the City Council and is a member of several committees —Works. Gas and Electricity. Finance and Administration and Water Committees. He has played a prominent part in the city’s patriotic activities and is Deputy-Controller of the E.P.S. and Chief Warden. MR H. G. B. HURST Mr H. Hurst is a local draper, having conducted his own business in Trafalgar street for the past 21 years. Mr Hurst was for several years president of the Nelson Soft Goods Association and has taken a prominent part in the organisation of the drapery trade throughout New Zealand, being appointed to the position of Dominion President of the New Zealand Federation of Drapers, Clothiers and Boot Retailers. Taking a keen interest in the relief of unemployment. Mr Hurst was chairman of the Relief Committee and when that body was amalgamated with the Local Unemployment Committee he was appointed to the executive. Mr Hurst holds an executive position on several organisations having for their object the welfare of the city. Mr Hurst has been a City Councillor for six years and during the present term of office he has served on the Gas and Electricity. Reserves. Finance and Administration. Water and Town Planning Committees. MR S KENNING Mr S. Kenning is a foreman carpenter for a prominent Nelson building firm, j For a period of nine years Mr Kenning was an employees’ representative on the Nelson College Council of Governors. and he was recently appointed Government nominee on that board. For many years he has been secretary of the Nelson branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. When formerly a resident of Hawkes Bay he had ten years' association with the Manchester Unity Oddfellows’ Lodge, of which he was Grand Master. MR S. McARTHUR Mr S. McArthur, who has been a resident of Nelson for the past nine years, is a retired business man from the West Coast, where he conducted a business at Ngakawau and Stockton for a long period of years. Mr McArthur successfully pioneered a movement in Hector for the erection of a Public Hall, and was one of the founders and trustees of the Ngakawau Medical Association and for 15 years served on the Granity School Committee. Retiring from business he came to Nelson, where he is a member of the Nelson Bowling Club. Mr McArthur was elected to the City Council six years ago and has been a member of the Works. Reserves, Water. Baths and Abattoir Committees and is a Council representative on the Nelson Institute Committee and Nelson Fire i Board. He has been a Justice of the Peace since 1920. MR M. MacLEOD Mr M. MacLeod, supervisor of the clerical division at the Nelson Post Office, has been a resident of Nelson for seven years. He was previously in Napier for 15 years and while there was secretary of the Provincial Cricket Association and delegate to the New Zealand Cricket Council for eight years. Since his arrival in Nelson Mr MacLeod has taken a prominent part in sporting activities and has been secretary of the District Cricket Association for six years, is secretary of the Maitai Bowling Club and a member of the Maitai Golf Club. He is chairman of the local branch of the Democratic Labour Party and is a member of the communications sections of the E.P.S. He has always been a prominent member of the P. and T. Association and has in turn occupied all the offices, being secretary of the Napier section for four years. After the Hawkes Bay earthquake he convened and was a member of the P. and T. Earthquake Committee. MR N. ROUT j Mr N. Rout is widely known through his association with the Nelson Perma- | nent Building Society, as secretary. Mr | Rout joined the Society’s staff in 1913. J and. with the exception of the period ! he was on war service, ho has occupied | his present position. He is a prominent I member of the Nelson Golf Club and i of the Nelson Bowling Club. A member of the present Council Mr Rout was a member of the following committees: Finance and Administration, Bylaws, Traffic and Transport, and ReMR G. P. RUSSELL Mr G. P. Russell was a member of the City Council for 11 years from 1927 to 1938. He is a Nelson businessman and founder of the firm of G. P. Russell and Sons. Before coming to the city he was a member of the Raetihi Town Board He has taken a keen interest in the formation of children’s playgrounds in Nelson, and is wellknown as the organiser for the old Nelson Gala Committee. He has taken an interest in various sports, having held office on the Nelson Rugby Union and being a past president of the Nelson Bowling Centre MR F. 11. SHARLAND Mr F. H Sharland, who was in business in Nelson for some time as a cycle and gun dealer, is at present engaged on general contracting work He served several terms on school committees in Marlborough and has been on the executive of the National Rifle Association of New Zealand for a number of i years, the first Nelsonian to have that ' distinction. He has been president of : the South Island Rifle Association four times and is the president of the Nelson i Rifle Association Mr Sharland was elected to the City Council three years ago and since then has been a member of the following Council committees • Works. Waler Bylaws. Traffic and Transport. Baths Abattoir an 4 Town Planning committees. He is an officer in the National Resere MR S. IV. STREET Mr S. W Street is a retired school master, having served in many parts of the Dominion before retiring from the

leadmastership of one of the largest chools in Timaru, and returning to 'Jelson, where he was born. Mr Street s a member of the committees for the rhildren’s Health Camp, Tor H, and 'rippled Children's Society. He is also hairman of the Nelson Arbor Day Comnittee. A member of the City Council, le is a member of the following comnittees: Works. Reserves. Bylaws, rraflic and Transport. Baths. Abattoir ind Town Planning committees. He is i Council representative on the comnittee of the Nelson Institute.
