MEN’S SINGLES TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP J. SOPER WINS MASON CUP The Golden Bay men’s singles tennis championships were played on the Hiawatha Club’s courts during the week-end under ideal weather conditions. Play was of a commendably high standard throughout. J. Soper, of Puramahoi, played versatile tennis in the preliminary rounds to reach the final with L. Nees (Hiawatha) who fully extended him in the deciding match, which Soper won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, thus emerging as the Mason Cup winner for 1940-41. Last year the Mason Cup was won bj M. Hume. RESULTS OF PLAY Following are the detailed results: — First round; N. Nesbitt beat A. Small, 6-5. 6-5; F. Soper beat L. Kerr, 6-2, 6-4; R. Nesbitt beat H. Page, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3; J. Soper beat T. Bruning, 6-3, 6-4; L. Nees C. J. Emms, L. Winter and J. Fulton, byes. Second round: Nees beat N. Nesbitt, 6-0, 6-2; Emms beat F. Soper, 6-2, 5-6, 6-4; R. Nesbitt beat Winter, 6-1, 6-5; J. Soper beat Fulton, 6-2, 6-0. Semi-finals: Nees beat Emms, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4; J. Soper beat R. Nesbitt, 6-1, 6-5. Final: J. Soper beat L. Nees, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
