GIFT PARCEL APPRECIATED

LETTER FROM SOLDIER IN EGYPT The Nelson Townswomen’s Guild has received the following typical letter of appreciation from a soldier in Egypt who received one of the gift parcels donated by the Guild: “Dear Friends,—Many thanks for the parcel that I received from you this week. The cake arrived in perfect condition and was enjoyed immensely by some English R.A.F. boys and myself. Special thanks I would like given to the lady who sent me good wishes and signed herself “A Friend.” I wish that I could be with you all at your card parties. I myself belong to Taranaki in the North but my mother was a Dunedin girl, so you see I have the greatest respect for South Island people. We New Zealanders are having a great time here in Egypt, plenty of work, play and excitement. Where we are camped we have the opportunity of bathing every day in the Mediterranean and I can assure you it is much appreciated, because fresh water here is very scarce. We are well into winter here now and the nights are rather chilly but the days are gloriously like our early summer at home. Well friends I will draw this short note to a close now and wish you all the best of health and a happy and bright Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I remain, yours gratefully, Private W. J. L. Thorp, D Company, 18th Auckland Rifle Battalion.”
