PATRIOTIC WORK

APPLEBY RIDING COMMITTEE SUPPORT FOR NELSQN QUEEN CARNIVAL A meeting of the Appleby Riding Controlling Patriotic Committee was held in the Ranzau School. Mr J. Pugh occupied the chair. The chairman reported that he had made enquiries regarding the Queen Carnival to be held in Nelson during January and February 1941. After discussion it was resolved that the riding co-operate in the effort, each sub-committee of the riding to assist one queen-to-be defined at a meeting—at a fair to be held in conjunction with a combined Nelson function if possible during the fortnight ending Bth February. It was agreed that produce from the riding should be apportioned to stalls representing the various districts, the cash proceeds to be allotted to the respective queens. Lambs, poultry and wheat appeared to be specially suitable for sale, and the chairman suggested that an endeavour be made to raise £3OO. It was resolved that letters of thanks be forwarded to Messrs Andrews Bros., Brightwater and to Mr Smith, Hope, for their assistance in carting produce for the recent Burnham Camp appeal. The chairman made reference to Mr C. C. Nash’s generosity in providing six tons of lime and a quantity of fertiliser for the Hope Patriotic Farm. Mr Nash is to be thanked for his generous donation, as are other anonymous donors who have assisted in various ways. Home Guard matters were discussed at length and the chairman intimated that a resident of the district would interview all eligible men in the riding to ensure tf\eir enrolment in the Home Guard. The Redwood’s Valley Committee reported that a well-attended ■ Home Guard meeting in their district had expressed a desire for a local training centre, and had appointed a committee and unit commander. The Redwood’s Valley Committee also announced that a patriotic fair would be held at Redwood’s Valley on Saturday next, 14th December: It was resolved that when collections, either of cash or produce were being made in any part of the district, j every household without exception | should be visited. A vote of thanks to the chair closed a most enthusiastic meeting.
