WOMEN’S DIVISION

WAKAPUAKA BRANCH At the last meeting of the year for the Wakapuaka branch of the W.D.F.U. there was a good attendance of members and friends, the afternoon taking the form of a social, which was presided over by the president. Mrs G. R. Dixon, and opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mesdames V. Thompson. A. East, A. Waterhouse and H. Manson, who have recently undergone medical treatment or suffered family bereavement. Members learned with pleasure that Mrs J. Corder, Provincial President, ! and Mr G. R. Dixon. President of the ' Farmers’ Union. Wakapuaka. have ; progressed well towards complete recovery. Letters were received from Miss Monk expressing thanks for kind letters of sympathy received in the loss of her mother, and from Mrs J. Corder. for kind thoughts, letters and gifts of flowers, etc., received during her illness. together with her best wishes for a brighter year in 1941. The Bring and Buy table for bi*anch funds did good business, and the Red' Cross Shop was discussed. A very warm welcome was accorded Mrs C. J. Hope who has transferred from the Sounds to reside in the district. After the general business was discussed, Mrs Thoms, who has recently arrived from England. delivered a most interesting talk on "Conditions in England.” The president and members expressed thanks and presented Mrs Thoms with a charming mauve and pink shoulder-spray finished with maidenhair fern. Mrs Thoms returned thanks. The competitions were interesting and l-esulted in Mrs P. Anderson winning the “Jumbled Proverbs” arranged by Mrs Shain. The Peg Bag competition was won by Mrs G. Westley, and the apron by Miss N. Dodson. A delicious afternoon tea was served

and a most enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the usual message for peace and goodwill, and the President’s best wishes to members for a happy Christmas and New Year. DOVEDALE BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Dovedale branch of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Sunday School. There was a fair attendance of members and Mrs Hall was in the chair. The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem followed by the reciting of the Creed. After the business and correspondendence were dealt with. Mrs Hall read a I‘eport on the Rest Home. Two short readings were given by Mesdames Hall and Fowler and were enjoyed by all. A competition arranged by Mrs E. J. Thompson was won by Mrs J. Fowler. The competition, a collection of vegetables was won by Mrs J. Read. Mrs Fowler was second and Mrs J. Davies was highly commended. The flower competition was won by Mrs L. Hall. Mrs J. Davies was second and Mrs C. Jordan highly commended. DOVEDALE JUNIOR BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Dovedale Junior Branch W.D. was held in the Sunday School room, the president. Miss Tressa Fowler being in the chair. As there was no meeting in November owing to seasonal work, that month's competitions and roll-call w r ere held also. The roll-calls were “Fillings for for sponges and biscuits” and "Your biggest fright.” The competition for a Victorian Posy was won by Miss Hilda Burnett, with Miss Dulcie Jordan second, and the one for six decorated cakes was won by Miss Tressa Fowler. with Miss Lene Biggs second. Miss Dulcie Jordan won the best bloom and Miss Shirley Brisbane was second. Mrs Hall, president of the Senior Branch, kindly judged the competitions. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Misses Hilda Burnett and Tressa Fowler. The next meeting will be held on 9th January, at 5 p.m.
