NELSON TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD CHRISTMAS PARTY | Members of the Nelson Towns- | women’s Guild and intending members are reminded that the final meeting of the Guild for this year will be held next Friday in the Marsden Hall at 2.30 p.m. A bright and happy programme has been arranged by Mrs H. Claughton and Mrs S. Wilson and members of the Musical and Play Reading Circles. CARD FUNCTIONS IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS The afternoon functions which have been arranged by the social committee of the {kelson Townswomen’s Guild during the last six months and which have been most popular, were brought to a close for this year recently. Notwithstanding other attractions there was a good attendance and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. The successful players were Mesdames Cooke, T. Hughes, N. Whitwell and R. Freeman and consolation prizes were presented to Misses Young, Wildman and Barnes and Mrs J. Wright. Two travelling prizes which caused great excitement and amusement were finally captured by Mesdames A. Cox and Wadsworth. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames A. B. Walker and J. Holmes, and Mrs J. Chapman, who also presented the prizes. The final evening card function took the form of a social evening. There was a record attendance and a very happy evening was spent by all who attended. Cards were played until 10 p.m. when supper was served. Mrs J. H. Walker, president of the Guild, after expressing the Guild’s thanks to those who had supported the evenings so well presented prizes to the following:—First prizes to Mesdames Moffatt, Pellew and Broadbent and Mr Moore. Consolation prizes to Mesdames Skyring, Powrie, W. H. Simpson and Miss Skyring. Travelling prizes to Mr and Mrs E. Neale. Opportunity was also taken to present a small gift to Mr J. Holmes and in making the presentation Mrs Walker expressed the Guild’s- thanks to Mr Holmes for carrying out the duties of M.C. so well and so willingly. The concert part of the programme which had been arranged by Mrs West was opened by Peter Bennett, who gave two very clever tap dances. Vocal solos by Miss B. Aydon and a very cheery community sing led by Miss Aydon and Mrs Drummond at the piano completed the programme. After Mrs Walker had thanked the artists for their help in the evening’s entertainment a very happy evening was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem. SUCCESSFUL PADDY’S MARKET IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS Despite the many other functions held in aid of Patriotic Funds the Nelsan Townswomen's Guild have every reason to be proud of their first attempt in organising a Paddy’s Market, which was held recently in the Marsden Hall Library. Mrs J. H. Walker, president of the Guild, in declaring the market open, expressed pleasure at seeing such a large number present and explained that as the Guild would be going into recess for two months they felt that a final patriotic effort should be made before closing down. Since March three patriotic card functions had been held every month and quite a lai'ge sum had been raised already for soldiers’ parcels and it was hoped that the final sum to be handed over after the sale would be still greater. Mrs Walker also took the opportunity of expressing the Guild's thanks to Miss Jennings who had so kindly brought her collection of jugs to the sale for exhibition. This collection was indeed a great attraction and Miss Jennings had quite a busy time giving further details to the many interested patrons.
