NEWMAN SHIELD
MARLBOROUGH’S CHALLENGE Next week-end will See the first Newman Shield challenge when Marlborough will play Nelson city. There have been several changes in the trophy holders in the competition during the last lew seasons. When Nelson forfeited to Motueka fori years ago, Marlborough took the trophy from them for the first time. Holding it rather luckily against both Waimea and Motueka in drawn games the following year. Marlbr ough in turn lost to Nelson who held it against all three in the next season. Waimea then took the Shield from Nelson in a match in which Nelson declared at 414 for eight, and promptly again lost it to Marlborough. However last season Waimea brought the Shield from Marlborough. After defending it against Motueka. they lost it once more to Nelson in a very exciting finish. Nelson then defended it agains' the new combined Takaka-Tapawera-Midland XI. The winners of the forthcoming gam. will meet Waimea during the holidays, followed immediately by Motueka. Seevral strong players in the city ' competition are not eligible for Nelson under the residence clause anu several others, including the College team, are not available for the match. The Nelsc i XI is now: Smith, Corbett, Stevens, i Busch, Birch, Preece, Schofield, O’Keefe, Hally, Mitchell and Guy.
