PROVINCIAL ORGANISATION ANNUAL MEETING ADDRESS BY MISS J. STEWART The 17th anual meeting of the Pri vincial Association of the Girl Guid> was held in the Marsden Library. Mi J. Stewart, president was in the chai Miss E. Gray, Provincial Commissioi er, stated that there were in the Nelsc province 351 guiders, guides and browi ies and 53 recruits. In making h< report Miss Gray spoke of the oppo tunity for service that guiding ga\ in the present time. The lack of guk ers was hindering the expansion of tf movement. “It is our job to convinc the right type of girl that guiding, b< sides being an absorbing game, is d< finitely a work of National Servic Unless we can do that, we are failin in our duty to the children who loc to us to provide their leaders.” The report and balance sheet wei adopted. The president, Miss Stewart, who h. been associated with the guide mow ment for nine years, spoke of the scop for guide work in spite of the widenin of school activities. She quoted Lor Bledisloe in saying that the guide movi ment develops enterprise, resourcefu ness, self-respect and good citizenship. The election of officers was then pr< ceded with. On the motion of Lad Rigg, seconded by Mrs Leggatt. Lad Scott was elected president. On th motion of Miss Hunter-Brown, seconde by Mrs Campbell, the following wer re-elected to the executive committei Mesdames W. Lock, H. S. Leggatt an E. B. Moore, Misses F. Maginnity, IV Nevin, Gibbs and J. Stewart. Mis Stewart wished to resign from the offic of president but not to sever her cor nection with guide affairs. Lady Scott then took the chair an invited Miss Stewart to speak abou an international guide meeting she ha attended at the home of Dame Alic Godman in London. Miss Stewart gav a most interesting account of the meet ing which was attended by Guides an Guiders from all the European coun tries with the exception of German; and Italy, and from all the Dominion: Present at the meeting were Princes Alice (chairwoman) and Lady Lathari who as Lady Nora Jellicoe was associat ed with guiding in New Zealand. Mis Stewart said that in England guides am guiders were doing invaluable work ii assisting in all ways in the receptioi areas for evacuated children. In con elusion Miss Stewart said that she fel strongly that the guide movement, whicl was a work of national service and ; work which Was doubly necessary ii the state of the world to-day, coul( never die. The meeting closed with the Nationa Anthem.
