LIME COMMITTEE'S REPORT

IMPLEMENTATION DELAYED [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. Because of the heavy expenditure resulting from war activities, the adoption of the recommendations of the Agricultural Lime Investigation Committee must be delayed, according to an announcement made yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Lee Martin. He added, however, that it was hoped that it would be possible to review the situation in the near future. "Some time ago the Government appointed a representative committee to investigate and report on the supply and distribution of agricultural lime throughout the Dominion.” Mr Martin said. "The committee’s report has been in my hands for some time, and its recommendations have been very carefully considered by Cabinet and by departmental officers. The report was placed on the table of the House recently. "Now that the report has been released I wish to place on record my appreciation and that of the Government to the committee for the very fine work which they have done in the compilation of this most valuable document.” the Minister added. “At the same time it is only fair to say that after very mature consideration Cabinet has decided that it cannot implement the rerecommendations of the committee at this stage. “The principles contained in the committee’s recommendations are recognised as a sound method of distributing the money available as Government subsidy on the transport of lime, but the implementation of these recommendations would inevitably mean an increased financial liability on the Consolidated Fund. Because of the heavy expenditure resulting from war activities, the adoption of the committee’s recommendations must be delayed but it is hoped that it will be possible to review the situation in the near future.”
