JAN KUBELIK DEAD

MASTER VIOLINIST AND COMPOSER [U.P.A.— By Electric Telegraph-Copyright] BERLIN. sth December. The death has occurred of the violinist Jan Kubelik. Jan Kubelik, of Czech nationality but with cosmopolitan habits and honours, has been one of the greatest violinists of the age. He made many world tours and was well-known on this side of the world. He has died at the age of 60. Kubelik was, in a way, the first of a remarkable line of notable exponents of the violin to expound with almost miraculous ease the difficulties invented for the embarrassment of others by genii such as Paganini, Sarasate, and Wieniawsky. Kubelik flashed like a meteor across the musical sky of Europe, and afterward completely subjugated England, America and the rest of the world. He was also a composer, and had a number of concertos to his credit. The fourth (with pianoforte accompaniment) was played during a tour both in Sydney and Brisbane (with orchestra), and was received with great enthusiasm. Kubelik was born at Michle, near Prague, his father being described as a “market gardener and musician.” Later in life the son, a wealthy man, made his home in Bohemia, where he lived for a large part of his life. He married a daughter of Count Czaky, present Hungarian Foreign Minister.
