HAMPDEN STREET SCHOOL BATHS

PRIME MINISTER TO OFFICIALLY OPEN NEXT SATURDAY’S FUNCTION Following further representations made by Mr if. Atmore M.P. the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, has advised that he is staying over next Saturday so that he will be able to accept the school committees invitation to officially open during the afternoon the new swimming baths at the Hampden Street School. At a recent meeting of householders and parents held in the schoolroom arrangements were made for a carnival to be held on the occasion of the official opening as certain funds are needed before essential features of the swimming baths can be provided. The 12th Regimental Band has kindly consented to play selections and it is hoped that an aquatic display will be staged by members of the Nelson Ladies’ and Men’s Swimming Clubs. Ample seating accommodation will be provided and an amplifying system is being installed thus enabling everyone to follow the proceedings. The following committees have been set up: Games, Hampden Tennis Club; swimming events, Mr F. Boulton; sweets stall, Mesdames Heslop, Meadowcroft and Biddle, cakes, Mrs Wood; ice cream and cordials, Hampden Tennis Club, ladies; afternoon tea. teaching staff; amplifier, Mr Walker (Messrs Wilkins and Field). It was decided that entrance to the grounds next Saturday should be from Ngatiawa street. Given fine weather there should be a good attendance to mark the completion of an effort which has extended over several years, by the committee and parents to establish swimming baths at the school and thus provide the children of the school and the residents of Nelson South with a health giving amenity and sport. _______________
