PHOTOGRAPHS AT MUSEUM

SCIENCE AND TRANSPORT CAWTHRON INSTITUTE AND CARNEGIE EXHIBITS [United Press Association] WELLINGTON. This Day. Two interesting displays of photographs are on view at the Dominion Museum. One is a Cawthron Institute display, the other a Carnegie exhibit —both prepared in Nelson. The Cawthron collection of photographs by the Curator, Mr W. C. Davies, comprises a large number of natural history studies of outstanding technical and artistic excellence. They will remain on view till the end of January. The 91 prints include a large number of botanical photographs, some taken in the studio, others in the field, showing examples of various native plants and their habitat. Even more remarkable are cloud studies over Nelson, showing some of the beautiful and unusual cirrus, cumulus and stratus effects typical of the New Zealand atmosphere. Further photographs of fossil sea shells and insect wings are of unusual interest. The other display illustrates the development of road transport in New Zealand, and includes some very interesting early prints. Bullock teams, old-time wool wagons, packhorse trains, and family and mail coaches recall the very different manners and modes of years which many old folk can still remember. There is a memorable photograph of a coach fording a flooded stream. Photographs of early motor vehicles are also included.
