BEE-KEEPING
NEW INSTRUCTOR FOR NELSON AREA Mr Eric Smellie, Government Apiary Instructor for the Nelson Greymouth area, has taken up his duties with headquarters at Greymouth. He replaces Mr C. R. Paterson, who has been transferred to Hamilton. There is also a local part-time apiary instructor. In conversation with a “Mail” representative yesterday Mr Smellie drew attention to the necessity for bees to be kept in regulation hives, and for any place where bees are kept to be registered. This has been required under the law since 1908, and it was necessary for those keeping bees to observe it. Otherwise there was danger of disease spreading among the bees. There were heavy penalties for non-observance. Mr Smellie is anxious to give all possible help to apiarists in his district, and increase the production of honey. Of the 122,000 registered hives in New Zealand there are 5000 in the Grey-mouth-Nelson area, and there are prospects for a record season there. The production from mixed sources is placed chiefly on the home markets. Because of the heavy nature of local honey gathered it is generally sold in the comb. The native flora of the West Coast is one of the main sources tapped by the busy bees.
