MOTUEKA WOMEN’S DIVISION

DECEMBER SOCIAL MEETING At the December social meeting of . the Motueka Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Mrs Inwood. who I presided, extended a cordial welcome to the members of the Motueka Women’s Institute, who were present l by invitation. Prior to the dispensing of afternoon . tea Mrs Tweedy. president Nelson ’ Federation of Women's Institutes, re- , ported in regard to the Arts and Crafts i classes that Mr Williams of Victoria College. Wellington was prepared to j ; hold in the district early next year, , j giving particulars of instruction, articles made, which could be sold for I patriotic funds, size of classes, etc. i Mr H. V. Ward, as previously ! arranged, gave a short address on the ' National Saving Scheme. which he preferred to as the “other arm,” one arm being the men overseas defending | the Empire, who. he said, must be | properly equipped and kept equipped, j By investing in the scheme Mr Ward i explained how the people in New Zealand could help the men on active service and at the same time help themselves. He urged all to save now and so prepare for the after-war period. Entertainment during the afternoon was provided by Mrs J. E. Boyce and , Mr H. V. Ward, who contributed solos, , for which accompaniments played by Mrs W. M. Thomas. A competition on “Articles used in the Kitchen” was won by Mrs Allan, the prize for the memory competition going to Mrs A. Weir. Shoulder sprays, accompanied by birthday greetings, were presented to tw'o members by the president, while Mrs L. Cowin. president of the Women’s Institute and Mrs Tweedy, who judged the competitions, w'ere also the recipients of sprays. Mrs Cowin returned thanks on behalf of the Institute members for the invitation to the social afternoon, and invited Division members to the Institute Christmas meeting on 20th December. The results of the competitions for the month were as follows: Six shortbreads. Mrs Weir, 1 and 2; Mrs In wood, 3. Hat trimming, Mrs Stringer. 1; Mr# Inwood. 2. Community singing with Mrs G. Wilkinson at the piano, and the singing of the New Zealand National Song and the National Anthem concluded a very enjoyable afternoon. BUSINESS MEETING Prior to the social afternoon a busi* ness meeting was held in the Division Hall. Mrs L. Inwod occupying the chair and extending a w-elcome to a newr member. Letters of thanks and appreciation for services rendered by the Women’s Division in the raising of funds during the recent carnival w r ere received from Messrs Brownlie and Pocklington respective secretaries of the Navy and Air Force King and Queen Committees, also from Mr A. H. j Cameron of the Carnival Executive. } Correspondence from Mrs A. D. Tay* jlo • in respect to hop-picking holidays I was discussed and finally it was left to Mrs Inw’ood to bring the matter before the next meeting of Provincial Executive. With regard to the children’s fancy dress party, postponed on account of very wet weather, members agreed that it be held on Saturday, 14th December and the Children’s Christmas party on the Saturday following. It w'as also decided that Christmas cakes be sent to members’ sons oa home defence. The secretary w r as instructed to w r rite to the Motueka Borough Council regarding the repair to seats in the Institute supper room. Members were reminded that the next business meeting would be held on the evening of Wednesday, 18th December instead of the afternoon, owing to the busy season commencing, ** * * The Patriotic Shop had a successful closing day last Thursday when the sum of £3l 11s 9d was realised. Competitions were w-on by Mr J. A. Harley, Mr V. Powell, and Miss Elizabeth Stedman. The shop will re-open on 20th February.
