MOBILE KERBS TO NEW HIGHWAY
AN EXPERIMENT Out in Chicago they are trying a significant experiment in the building of the new $205,000,000 super highway —mobile kerbs. At first only three of these will be provided along 2,000 ft of the highways, but if successful they may be use on all busy highways. The 100 ft highway will provide 10 traffic lanes. In the morning, when traf-'c i~ heavy in one direction, the mobile kerbs will be so operated that eight lanes will be used for the traffic flow in one direction and two in the other. During the clay only the kerb in the middle of the highway will be used, thus allowing five streams of cars on each side. At night, when the morning flow is reversed, the touch of a button raises the other two kerbs and traffic is again divided into eight lanes and two. The kerbs are of concrete and are about Sin high. When lowered they arc flush with the pavement.
