CHURCH OF CHRIST

BIBLE SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY When the anniversary services of the Church of Christ Bible School were held, the building was filled to capacity. The Sunday afternoon service was enjoyed by both the scholars and the audience, the singing of the former, under the conductorship of Mr G. J. Stout, being a treat. Mr A. B. Inglis, of Nelson, who had been one of the first superintendents of the school, was the principal speaker for the occasion. His message entitled M Growing” was listened to attentively. The Kindergarten mistress, Miss H. Jeffries, presented the prizes to the tiny tots*. Mrs F. Farley, who for a number of years has presented a doll to the best girl in the Kindergarten, made the presentation again this year, the doll being won by Beverley Glover. The superintendent’s report revealed the school’s condition as flourishing. The roll, including the Kindergarten Department and Cradle Roll stood at 95, and the school had a staff of 12 loyal teachers. An appeal was made for new scholers. During the past twelve months a number of families connected with the school had moved to other districts, but new scholars had taken the places of those who had gone. At the evening service the children again rendered their items creditably to another appreciative audience. The speaker was Mr J. K. Robinson, Minister of the Church of Christ, Nelson, and his subject, “Life’s Little Day.” At the close of this service the school superintendent, on behalf of the scholars, presented Mr Stout with a book as a token of appreciation for teaching them the anniversary hymns over a period of years. On Tuesday evening the annual concert and prize-giving was held in the school hall. Once again the building was crowded and a very fine programme presented. Representatives from other Bible schools were present and also from the Whakarewa Home. Mrs S. Glover, wife of the superintendent, presented the school attendance prizes, and every scholar who had entered for the Dominion Bible Schools’ examination, was handed a prize by Mr M. J. Savage, minister of the Motueka Church. It was intimated that out of nearly 90 entrants in the Dominion examination for this year one of the Motueka Church of Christ boys, Thomas Hickmott, gained fourth place. Each year the Mayor (Mr R. J. L. York) donates a special prize, a Bible to the best scholar between the ages of 8 to 10 years. Three scholars, Betty Barrow, Raymond Wilson and Trevor Glover, qualified this year, being a credit to themselves as well as to the school. It was unfortunate that the Mayor, on account of illness, was unable to be present, but the Mayoress officiated in his absence. *The school was grateful, the superintendent said, for Mr York’s interest and wished him a speedy recovery. A play ’ entitled “Where Love Is” brought the concert part of the entertainment to a close, after which two little girls, Darilyn Mabey and Jennifer Glover presented bouquets to the two Misses Jeffries, who were responsible for the very enjoyable programme presented. PLUNKET SOCIETY At a meeting of the Motueka Plunket Society held yesterday afternoon there were present: Mesdames H. V. Ward (chair), A. Green, Rosenberg, senr., Frumerin, Boyd, G. Green, Langley and Miss Cooper. Accounts amounting to £2B 19s 8d vere passed for payment. Final arrangements were made for the Garden Party and Baby Show to be held at the residence of Mrs C. W. Thorp on Friday afternoon.
