SCHOOL EXERCISE BOOKS
STANDARD SPECIFICATION SUGGESTED EXPLOITATION ALLEGED 1 From Our Own Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, This Day. An urgent question by Mr A. S. Richards (Government, Roskill) in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan) if he would undertake to introduce a standai’d specification prescribing the number, size, and quality of pages of exercise books and establish a price for the protection of parents from “gross exploitation.’’ The Minister said that the matter was being investigated at the present time. Mr Richards said that according to his information the number of pages in school exercise books had been reduced considerably and that the price, which had remained unchanged, was at least 200 per cent, in advance of what was justified to recoup increased paper costs. Another point he made was that a reduction to this extent in the size of the books involved a waste of cardboard.
