STREET SEALING WORK SAVING IN MAINTENANCE COSTS FORTNIGHTLY MEETING t r Reporting at last night's meeting of • the Tahunanui Town Board on recent. • road sealing work carried out in Green 1 street. Roto street. Rui street and Rawhili street. Mr J. Logan said that a very good job had been done and that in comparison with the cost of the ' ; work the saving in maintenance would ) be considerable. I The chairman (Mr C. H. Chamber | lain) agreed with this view and emphasised that ah the bus routes in the I I district were now sealed and this should I result in a big saving in maintenance.! i It should also alleviate the dust nuis- j Members present were: Messrs C. H. I .Chamberlain (chairman), J. Logan, C. I Palmer. L. C. Haywood and T. W. Rob- j erts. ANNUAL RUBBISH COLLECTION ; T hc Town Clerk stated that the an-j nual rubbish collection in the district ! would be made on 12th December. A I collection of waste non ferrous metals | : will be made at the same date. FOREMAN’S REPORT The board's foreman. Mr E. E. Win ! reported as follows: , | “The following streets were tar sealed last. Thursday: Green street from Mur- , itai street, to Golf road, Roto street, Rui street and Rawhili si. These were opened on Monday. The footpath from 'Cunningham’s corner to the Main road .has been cleaned up along with part of the Muritai street and Main road j • footpaths. We are now working on I Beach road. The shoulders of the bitumen have been filled in with metal ; from the Roding tunnel.” BOARD’S NEXT MEETING I j It was decided that after the board's G next meeting on 17th December no ‘ | meeting be held over the Christmas :! holiday period until 14th January. The board s employees are to be granted the week’s holiday due to them over the i Christmas period. I A letter was received from the (Tahunanui School Committee regarding : the drain outside the school from which j water backs up into the school grounds. 4u lt u VaS decid?d lo await a report from ! the board’s engineer before considering I the matter. CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL FUND ! The Department of Internal Affairs wrote regarding the subsidy due on the ' funds raised in the district for a Cen tennial Memorial. It was decided to , °htain the necessary particulars from the Tahunanui Centennial Committee. No. 13 SCHEME WORKERS Information was sought by the Department of Labour about the board's position in regard to No. 13 Scheme workers, a report having been received in Wellington that Tahunanui did not appear to be in very great need of subsidised labour and that the men were largely employed on maintenance rather than constructional work. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply that the board had sufficient new work in hand to employ all the men now working under the scheme in the district. They would be well emploved on the formation of Centennial road, j CENTENNIAL ROAD Some discussion on the proposed | j work to be carried out on Centennial ; road arose when Mr Palmer mention-I j ec l the plan on which the Works Com- ! jmittee was working. He explained i that the road would not be on the ■ same level as the other roads in the (district and that it would slope down from both Beach road and Muritai street so that in the centre it would be about 2ft 6ins above the swamp level. Mr Roberts expressed surprise at this arrangement and said that he had always understood that it was to be a flat road right through, which would conform to the other roads in the district and look a finished job. He j thought nothing would look worse I than the type of road proposed. Mr Palmer said that a layout for the road had been submitted by the : board's former engineer and passed by ; the board. If Mr Roberts was not in I agreement with the scheme that was (the time he should have voiced his j opinions. ! Mr Roberts said that if he had real(ised what was proposed he would de-; ! finitely have opposed it. He had had' his heart and soul in the task of form- ■ j ing a tine Centennial Park and if the j ; war had not intervened he would have i | worked as hard as anyone for it. As it! . was he thought the board should take full advantage of the subsidised labour offering and form as good a road as possible. Other members pointed out the enormous amount of filling that would be required if the road was raised to the 'level suggested by Mr Roberts. also , other difficulties. It had been intended to have the whole area of the Centen- j ; nial Park at the same level as the road ' and if this was made too high the j amount of spoil needed would be. j enormous. On the other hand, said the chairman, it had been intended to form a 40ft road and if the park was not brought up to the same level the batter from the edges of the road to ground level would be very long and the width j involved brought up to at least COft as it was intended to do the filling with ' sand. After further discussion it was decided on the motion of Mr Roberts, seconded by Mr Haywood, that the En-' I gineer. Mr C. I. Kidson. be asked to give a survey of Centennial road to conform with modern road standards. '
