PRESBYTERIAN MISSIONARY
TOUR OF GOLDEN BAY SERIES OF ADDRESSES BY MISS SUTHERLAND Miss Sutherland, the Presbyterian missionary, who has had twelve years’ experience of church mission work in Northern India and is on furlough in New Zealand, has been visiting the Golden Bay district. During her stay, Miss Sutherland, who was the guest of Mr and Mrs G. Maunder, of Commercial street, Takaka, took the opportunity of touring the district and addressing meetings at Takaka, Tarakohe and Collingwood. On Friday afternoon, Miss Sutherland met members of the Takaka Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild at the residence of Mrs Maunder. Miss Sutherland addressed the large gathering of ladies on interesting aspects of her woi'k ip the Indian mission field, illustrating her narrative with a series of lantern slides. At the Tarakohe School on Sunday afternoon, Miss Sutherland took the address at a well-attended service. On this occasion she dealt more particularly with the different religious sects and the caste system in India, which created great difficulties for those engaged in Christian mission work. Miss Sutherland also told of some of the good work the missionaries were doing to bring the Gospel to the people of India. Miss Sutherland was also present at the evening service in the Takaka Presbyterian Church on Sunday, conducted by the Rev D. W. Morgan. There was a very large congregation to hear Miss Sutherland speak on Christian missions in India. Much was being done, she said, for the physical and mental welfare of the people. Christian missionaries had realised the dire need for medical and educational work being undertaken as an important part of their activities and they were now working along these lines. An important aspect of the activities, Miss Sutherland said, was the training of young Indian men and women so that they might carry on church, educational and medical work among their own people. An innovation at the service was the screening of a series of beautiful lantern slides showing glimpses of Indian scenery and illustrating the work of the Christian Church in that country. On Monday Miss Sutherland visited Collingwood. where she addressed a well-attended meeting at the residence of Mrs Brown. The Rev D. W. Morgan presided. Miss Sutherland spoke interestingly of the customs of the Indian people and answered numerous questions about mission work in India. On behalf of those present, Miss McConnell thanked the speaker for her interesting and informative address which had been greatly appreciated. Miss Sutherland returned on Tuesday to Wellington, where she staying with her parents.
