MAPUA

PATRIOTIC MATTERS WORK OF COMMITTEE That the Mapua district is not falling behind in efforts to raise funds for patriotic purposes is clear to those actively engaged in administrative work, • but there, may exist some doubt in the ; minds of the public generally. Delegates from the various bodies concern- ; ea may not have had the opportunity to ! report upon activities, and, to make the 1 position clear, it may be as well to outline briefly the actual work accom- ' plished so far. In the first place, a strong committee was formed by resolution at a general ■ meeting when, with recent additions, the following were elected to office: Mr :i A Forsyth and H. G. Thawley (Hills : Union); Mrs Wakefield and Mrs Clark • (Women’s Institute); Mr Sladen and 1 Mr Wakefield (Bowling Club); Mr Sluchbery and Mr Clark (Mapua School); Mr Archibald and Mr Walkey • (Mahana School); Mrs Forsyth and Mrs 1 Grainger (Women’s Division F.U.); Mr ; F. Archer (Mahana Fruitgrowers’ As- ’ sociation); Mr H. Wells (Mapua Fruitgrowers’ Association); Mr F. D. Tait 1 (Tasman-Mapua branch, N.Z.F.U.); Mr Evans and Mr Reed (Mapua branch, ’ N.Z. Labour Paidy); Mr E. Arnold and M>- Gill (Mapua branch Waterside Wor- ’ kers’ Union); Mrs Avery and Mr E. C. Avery (Tennis Clubl; Mrs Dormer and Mrs A. Grainger (Croquet Club); Mrs j Forsyth and Mrs Dormer (Plunket Sot ciety): Mr Jackson and Mr M. Weils J (Tamaha Scout Committee); Mr J. Alt! lan. and Mr D. Wells (Presbyterian j Church Committee). In turn the forej going elected an executive committee - to administrate, the following being the executive: Mr A. Forsyth (chairman),

Mr Jackson (treasurer), Mr Clal-k (secretary), and Mrs Wakefield, Mrs Dormer, Mr H. G. Thawley and Mr Sladen. It may well be pointed out that the foregoing committee is purely subord- ; nate to the Controlling Committee of the Moutere Riding, which is made up of two delegates from the sub-commit-tees, Upper Moutere, Tasman, Mapua and Lower Moutere. This controlling committee is in turn responsible to the Motueka Committee, which likewise is responsible to the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Committee. To raise funds it was decided to make house to house collections at suitable intervals while the Mapua Committee at the general meeting resolved that the individual’s contributions be not made public. The first collection, published in the current statements by the Provincial Committee, amounted to £39 15s 6d. With the second collection almost completed, some £65 has been raised to date in this area. Authorised collectors for the Mapua sub-committee are Mrs Dormer, Mrs Grainger, Mrs Forsyth, Mr Arnold, Mr Walkey and Mr Jackson. A further collector in lieu of Mr Arnold, who has enlisted, is to be appointed. A general meeting of delegates from the various bodies concerned is to be held shortly, when the executive will report upon its work and results thereto. Now that the seasonal work has been completed in the district, interested workers will be able to devote more time and energy to the means of raising funds for patriotic purposes, and, while the results so far are pleasing, it may confidently be expected that these will be considerably added to in the immediate future. It is cheering to learn that, in addition to the above, various local bodies have already “stood to” in patriotic impulses. A number of gift parcels have been subscribed for in the district, whilst small but none the less useful gifts have been prepared for local men who are in camp. The Women’s Institute has been to the fore in these matters while they also have a knitting bee under way. Some movement whereby the ladies of the district are to combine to assist in a mass effort is being considered. From the above, it will be agreed that the district may well be pleased with the efforts so far, and all will admit that, when in full swing, the people of Mapua will be doing their share.
