SENIOR CRICKET

Y.M.C.A. DEFEAT OLD BOYS A 4 RUN MARGIN ON FIRST INNINGS SATURDAY’S PLAY The Old Boys and Y.M.C.A. senior cricket teams have met four times since 1 M.C.A. came into the senior competition. and in each case an exciting finish has been staged with the honours ' going three times to the new team. Last season Y.M.C.A. gained a 3 run win, and in the second match Old Boys won ' in. the last few moments of the game. , 1° this first round this session Old Boys very nearly pulled the game out of the fire after being behind on the . first innings and declaring in the sei cond. and on Saturday Y.M.C.A. again . won by 4 runs. : Continuing with five for 105 in reply t to Y.M.’s 162. Dee who had batted well ■ the previous day was smartly caught by ’ Hurst at slip, and the next two wickets > added only 2, so that 28 runs were re--1 quired when the last man went into join R. Newman. Batting confidently these two took the total to 158. Stevens showing particularly good form. At this ; stage R. Newman miss-hit a short ball ’ over slip’s head where Hurst took an- , other good catch to bring off a win. [ Batting again with a bare possibility 5 of an outright result. Y.M.C.A. had : three down for 27, and were all out at . 180, but of this total three men scored 149. Hurst’s 54 included no fewer than t 10 fours. J. Du Feu had 7 fours, and • O'Keefe 5. The umpires were Messrs E. M. Jackt son and T. B. Louisson. ; With almost the identical team as last ■ year, Old Boys who have won the . championship three years in succession, 5 have had four successive defeats. Pe--1 culiarly enough, the only win has been against College, who have not otherwise been defeated, and who beat Y.M.C.A. who twice beat Old Boys. The latter’s formerly strong batting has broken down in almost every match, except on two occasions when they have declared in the second innings.
