MOTUEKA

RUGBY SUB-UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MELTING HELD LAST EVENING At a management committee meeting of the Motueka Rugby Sub-Union held last evening there were present Messrs A. E. Fry (chairman). E. Redmond, C. j Eggers, J. Holyoake, H. B. McGlashen j 1 and F. C. Wright CORRESPONDENCE p In respect to a complaint from the ' Upper Moutere Club regarding a breach 1 of the Upper Moutere ground conditions : by the Wanderer Football Club, it was \ resolved that the secretary of the Wan- < derer Football Club be notified of the ; complaint from Upper Moutere, and ] asked to see that there is no repetition , of the offence. « The secretary, Nelson Rugby Football , Union, wrote stating that the sub-unions , letter regarding Nelson players playing in the Motueka area had been dealt with by his Union. The writer stated that the question in point was that , these players, G. Lusty and J. Fowler, . who definitely resided in the Nelson , area had not been granted a clearance or transfer to play in the Motueka area as laid down in the rules of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union. It was ’ mentioned in the letter that the matter of Lusty and Fowler getting a game in a Nelson team had not been discussed, but said the writer “Clubs in our area ] would be pleased to give either of them a game. The question is one of complying with the rules of the N.Z.R.F.U. in respect to residential qualifications.” After certain aspects of the case had 1 been considered in committee, the chairman said that the Nelson Union had to a certain extent misunderstood the SubUnion’s letter, which was meant to con- | very the idea that Motueka wished to i obtain permission to play Lusty in the I Motueka area. He had spoken to a Neli son official on the matter, and had i pointed out that it was not the desire j of the Motueka Sub-Union to force j I any player on the bank, and was sure that Nelson felt the same way. The chairman said the whole point was if there was a genuine reason for the player desiring to play out side of his district. To the best of the SubUnion’s knowledge this player had genuine reasons for doing so, but it was his responsibility to assure the Nelson Union on this point. Mr Fry said that if this was done he felt sure the Nelson Union would raise no objections. Failing permission from Nelson, the Motueka Sub-Union would have nc option, in accordance with the rules, but to debar him from playing in the Motueka competitions. It was resolved, the chairman and Mr Eggers, that application be made to the Nelson Rugby Union for permission to play G. Lusty in the Motueka SubUnion’s competitions, and that the Nelson Union be informed of this player’s statements on the matter. THIRD GRADE TEAMS J. T. Lewis, writing on behalf of the two teams in the third grade competition, asked if it would be possible to arrange the usual representative games against outside teams. It was pointed out that the playing of these two teams each Saturday was an important factor in causing a lack of enthusiasm among young players. The writer suggested that the Sub-Union consider arranging not only the two usual fixtures against a Nelson fourth grade representative team, but also a series of matches against individual teams in the Nelson fourth grade competition. It was resolved, the chairman and Mr ; Wright, that the secretary endeavour to arrange with the Nelson Union for a fourth grade representative team to play Motueka thirds, and to enquire if it would be possible to arrange matches » with club teams. ■ HUIA CUF i ; TOWN VERSUS COUNTRY » After a brief discussion on the ques--5 tion of fixtures it was decided on the : motion of Messrs Holyoake and Eggers. ■ that a town versus country match for 1 the Huia Cup be played at Motueka on 1 15th July. 1 The selection of the teams was left to ’ the sole selector, who will be requested • to select after the match a represen- : tative team to play Goden Bay at ’ Takaka on the 22nd July. GROUND IMPROVEMENTS ; Mr H. B. McGlashen reported that ; the men engaged at Rugby Park were ■ doing good and necessary work. A [ certain amount of concreting had been - carried out in front of the grand stand, , and he thought the whole of the work . at the Park would be completed in l about ten days. SCHOOLS REPRESENTATIVE The chairman expressed pleasure that a representative from the schools was attending the Sub-Union meetings. He assured Mr Wright that the Union would do all in its power to assist the young players. Mr Wright said he appreciated very much the invitation to attend the Sub--1 Union meetings on behalf of the schools 1 and said that the closer contact than J before between these organisations would go a long way towards maintain--1 ing interest in the schools ' RIWAKA RUGBY TEAM The following players wil represent t Riwaka in their match with Upper i Moutere on Saturday: Thomas (2), Franklin, Stephens, Bradley, Soane, - Reed, Fry, Walker (forwards); Ryder, ;. Fowler, Askew', Evans, Trewavas. Chap- - man. Reed, A. Gray (backs). Players are advised that cars for Upe per Moutere will leave the Motueka Post Office at 2 p.m.
