SNOW BLOCKS ROADS
HEAVY FALL AT OTIRA LEWIS PASS ROUTE CLOSED lUDitei Press Association! GREYMOUTH, 11th June. A heavy fall of snow during the weekend has blocked both the Arthur’s Pass-Otira Gorge and Lewis Pass roads, according to advice received by the secretary, Mr W. H. Harley, of the Greymouth branch of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). After 1 a.m. to-day it was impossible for cars to get through the Otira route. The snow plough kept for clearing the road is not available and is not expected to be for about two weeks, as it is undergoing overhaul. Gangs of men will be employed to-morrow in an attempt to clear away the snow. The goods train from Christchurch due at Greymouth at 5 a.m. to-day did not arrive until 6.30 a.m., having been delayed at Arthur’s Pass by snow. Owing to telephonic communication with Greymouth having been interrupted particulars about the Lewis Pass route are not available, but a grader will be used there to-morrow by the Public Works Department.
