AUCKLAND'S CENTENNIAL DRIVE
OPENED BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL CONSERVATION OF PLACES OF BEAUTY I United Preae Association i AUCKLAND. 10th June. The need of the conservation of places of beauty was expressed by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, when he officially opened Auckland’s new Centennial Drive on the crest of the Waitakere ranges adjacent to the city this morning. His Excellency hoped that the Auckland example would be an incentive to other places so that the beauties of the Dominon could be developed as time went on. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, said the people of New Zealand were entitled to access to beauty spots. He said it was hoped to complete the Homer tunnel before the end of the year. It would be the best scenic drive in the world. Auckland’s Centennial Drive had cost £134,000, of which £14,000 was provided by local bodies and the balance by the Government The drive would be maintained by the Main Highways Board. The Minister referred to the need of safe roads for the increasing motor traffic. Other speakers included the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, who said the money had been well spent, the Hon. B. Martin, M.L.C., and the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis.
