COMPULSORY UNIONISM
iTn The Editor I Sir,—ln answer to “Union Musician” in your paper of Friday, 9th June, it seems to me that the letter was written as a matter of greed. This “Non Unionist’’ band are all members of the Labour Party and are entitled to play without fees for that party to help them in any effort to forward the aims and funds of their organisation. In further answer to your correspondent. I am in a position to say that the majority of professional dance musicians are in full time employment during the day. This is contrary to all aims and ideals cf Unionism. If these unionist musicians are loyal to the present labour movement they must know that the position is ‘‘One man, one job.” The orchestra in question knows this and the organisation they belong to would not sanction them making a paying proposition of their aptitude for musical maters. The reason for “Unionist Musician’s” letter and bitterness thereof is not hard to seek. He is evidently a tory of tories er he would see that the non-unionists orchestra is a help and not a hindrance to our labour organisations. I ask “Unionist Musician” to keep to his proper walk in life and not to interfere with those who earn their living solely by the profession of music. If he has a grievance and is a loyal unionist, why not put it through the proper channels, instead of a cheap sneer through the press.—l am, etc., H. GULLY. Tahunanui, 9th June.
