HARRIER NOTES
CROSS-COUNTRY RACE AT RICHMOND NOVICE EVENT WON BY B. COX HANDICAPS FOR NEXT SATURDAY At Richmond on Saturday the Nelson Harrier Club staged the first of the season’s cross-country races, the Novice Handicap contested over a distance of two miles. The scratch man, B. Cox, ran a welljudged race, catching the limit men about half-way on the journey. After trailing them for a while, he went to the front and opened up a gap which left him well clear of the field. Coming home full of running he finished thirty yards clear of N. Tanner, who had a margin of about twenty yards from G. McGregor in third place. There were eight starters. 'Detailed results are: B. Cox (scratch) Ist and fastest time, llmins 24secs. N. Tanner (20secs) 2nd. G. McGregor (15secs> 3rd. R. Kenning (15secs) 4th. G. Trathen (55secs) sth. The winner, B. Cox, is a well known local track runner, having been a prominent miler for some years past, and on Saturday’s result he gives, in his first winter season, every indication of putting up some very creditable performances in the cross-country sport, the winter side of the running game. N. Tanner, is an unlucky runner. He always performs well and is rarelv unplaced, but has yet to score a win. G. McGregor comes from Wellington, where he runs with the Baptist Harrier Club. Temporarily located at Nelson he has been turning out with the local club to keep in trim. R. Kenning is another unlucky runner who is always close up in the placings, b t never manages to notch a G. Trathen held on well in his first effort across country. NEXT SATURDAY’S RACE Next Saturday another race will be held at Richmond.
