United 0. The first of the Benefit Shield matches for the season were played at Rugby Park on Saturday when there was a good attendance of the public. Junior and third grade competition matches were also continued. RIWAKA V. UPPER MOUTERE Upper Moutere, who were at a disadvantage by having to play against a strong breeze and bright sun in the first half of their match with Riwaka, had fourteen points registered against them in the first spell. On changing over, however, Moutere practically bridged the gap, and in an exciting finish Riwaka ran out the winners by seventeen points to fourteen. Parly in the game Riwaka opened their account by Trewavas securing near the half-way mark and dashing through the opposition for a good try. Reed failed with the kick. Riw&ka 3. Upper Moutere 0. Teece, obtaining possession from a line-out, carried the attack to Riwaka’s territory. A penalty kick to Riwaka allowed Fowler to reverse the position and eventually Moutere forced down. The Riwaka forwards held their own for several minutes, the ball travelling on to Fowler, Evans and Chapman in the backs. Moutere repelled the invaders and sent Teece away in a strong run for the line. This player narrowly missed scoring in the corner. Garforth was prominent in a further effort, but an infringement held up the movement, and Riwaka broke through and Thomson, the Moutere full-back, was called upon to clear. Fowler picked up and darted through the opposition to be soundly upended by Thomson in the Moutere twenty-five. Riwaka were persistent and kept their opponents hot on defence. Trewavas secured and again penetrated to register his second try which was converted by Reed. Riwaka 8, Upper Moutere 0. Watson, who was playing a hard game in the forwards, attempted to place Moutere on the offensive, but was smothered. Off-side play by Moutere allowed Riwaka to increase their score at the hands of Soane. Riwaka 11, Upper Moutere 0.

The ball was again taken up field in a forward rush, and Soane, smartly evading two opponents, went in for a try. Reed’s kick at goal was charged down. Riwaka 14, Upper Moutere 0. On changing over Moutere set up a vigorous attack, the forwards breaking through the defenders for Craig to score. Garforth added the extra points. Upper Moutere 5, Riwaka 14

A period of open midfield play was followed by Thomson finding the line well inside Riwaka’s territory. From the line-out Watson snapped up the ball and battled his way over. Garforth failed to convert. Upper Moutere 8, Riwaka 14.

In a further attack Kennedy sent his backs away, but the movement broke down. Kemp and Watson combined and led Moutere upfield. Trewavas returned with a strong kick. Moutere’s repeated efforts to penetrate were met with stubborn defensive work op the part of Riwaka. Play eased to half-way from where Evans kicked through and Trewavas following up fast secured his third try for the day.Soane failed with the kick. Riwaka 17, Upper Moutere 8.

The Riwaka forwards with Fry leading invaded, but Moutere regained the lost ground from a free-kick. Thomson booted to the corner and Moutere swarmed to the attack. Riwaka were penalised close in and Thomson goaled Upper Moutere 11, Riwaka 17.

Both sides fought hard for an opening, the ball travelling up and down the field in good style. A bright solo effort by Craig placed Moutere on the attack. The defenders were penalised for off-side, but Thomson failed to turn the opportunity to account. Gates, who had replaced Garforth, got well away before being grassed and Moutere were again on the attack. Thomson wad given a further chance with a free kick and made no mistake. Upper Moutere 14. Riwaka 17.

The Riwaka forwards swept upfield with renewed energy for the defenders to be penalised. Soane was unlucky in kicking a poster. A great run by Kennedy from halfway saw Moutere again pressing along the line. The defenders, however, were awarded a free-kick and cleared. Moutere returned with determination to equalise the scores, but the final whistle sounded with Riwaka the winners by 17 points to 14. Mr H. Hogan controlled the match. HUIA V. UNITED The score of ten points to nil in favour of Huia in their match with United was not a true indication of the merits of the respective teams. United were not so fortunate with the free-kicks as their opponents, but in other respects had a fair share of the ball.

After play had been in progress for several minutes B. Fry marked and found the line in United’s twenty-five. The defenders counter-attacked, but again lost ground and Lewis cleared from a penalty kick. The ball travelled upfield for B. Fry to return, and Huia invaded. The United forwards took charge and W. Boyce, the Huia fullback, worked hard for his side in repelling attacks.

Within a few minutes United were awarded two free-kicks in handy positions but Carruthers and Dennett failed to turn them to account. The halftime whistle sounded with no scores being registered.

From a scrum in Huia territory United hooked to Beer to Carruthers who booted for Boyce to return. Dennett secured and forcing his way through the opposition, sent on to Carruthers to Horrell who was within striking distance when brought down by Lunn. A scrum was

j ordered, and play eased to the twenty- j ! five mark where United failed with an- 1 j other penalty kick. The ball travelled i upfield and Carruthers cleared. An J i infringement by United cost them a j | score, B. Fry goaling with a welldirected kick. Huia 3, United 0. Bosselman and Knapp led a forward rush to United’s quarters. From a loose scrum the ball came out to Beer to Carruthers to Dennett to relieve

the pressure. Lewis, Wratt and Reynolds played well against a heavier pack of forwards, prominent among whom were Bosselman, Knapp, Hunt and Newman. Following a free-kick by Carruthers, which went wide, Boyce booted upfield for Dennett to secure, and after battling his way through the opposition, passed to Wratt to Horrell who was pushed into touch near the corner. Huia carried play to the opposite end and were awarded a penalty kick in front of the goal, B. Fry converting. Huia 6, United 0. Dennett securing from the loose dashed down the sideline and passed infield, a knock-on nullifying the movement. The match was controlled by Mr E. Codj’re. THIRD GRADE HIGH SCHOOL V. UNITED High School gained the decision over United thirds by 10 points (two tries and a potted goal) to nil.
