STOKE-NELSON W.D.F.U.

FIFTH BIRTHDAY TARTY A very large crowd gathered in the Stoke Hall on a recent afternoon lo celebrate the fifth birthday party of the W.D.F.U. The president (Mrs L. K. Hodge) received the guests of the afternoon and gave everyone present a hearty welcome. She said how proud she was lo see so many women of different organisations gathered together to enjoy a pleasant afternoon. The New Zealand Anthem was sung to open the proceedings and the W.D. Creed recited. Apologies were received from Mrs Robinson, the first Stoke President; Mrs Stephens, at whose home the Stoke Branch was formed and Mrs Forsyth, who was Provincial President at the time the Branch was formed: also from Mesdames Stead and Mitchell (members, Mrs Atmore, Miss Karsten. Miss Gray, Mrs Corder, Mrs Bcuke, Mrs Inwood, Mi's Corby, Mrs Davies and Mrs Saunders. Branches which sent apologies and greetings were Hiwipango. Redwood's Valley. Dovedale and Pangatotara. A programme of varied entertainment was enjoyed, being contributed to by the Playreading Circle of the Women’s Club. Nelson; Mrs Nightingale; Mrs Charlesworth, Miss Grace Inkster and little Pamela Leighs. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the artists by prolonged acclamation. As is usual at a W.D. function a sumptuous afternoon lea was done justice to, and friends chatted until the “bell” pronounced the important “item” of the afternoon—the cake cutting ceremony. Mrs Charlesworth was asked to light the five candles, and Mrs R. Ching to blow them out. Airs Campbell to make the first cut and Miss Smith the second.

At this juncture Airs Hodge made presentations to Airs Campbell and Aliss Smith who are leaving the branch for a prolonged time—Mrs Campbell to visit the Homeland and Miss Smith lo reside in Auckland. Both members carry the branch’s good wishes with them.

Greetings were conveyed lo the Branch by Mrs Hildyard, Provincial President; Airs Chaytor on behalf of the Women’s Institutes and Wakefield W.D.; Airs Page on behalf of Nelson ladies: Mrs Wells, visiting Nelson, from Franch Pass and from Brooklyn (Wellington) Women's Guild through Mrs Hill, also visiting Nelson: Stoke-Wakatu W. 1.: Nelson and Nelson West Townswomen’s Guilds; Richmond Division and Institute through Mrs Hockey and Airs Wilkes respectively

Mrs Hodge and Mrs Taplin were presented with flowers by Mrs Nelson Lorizner from the committee ladies. Airs Taplin asked the committee’s permission lo send her flowers to Airs H. W. Chisnall, who was sick in hospital. The secretary was also instructed to write to Mrs Chisnall wishing her a speedy recovery to good health and to tell her about the afternoon.

The points prizes for the year result ed as follows: Airs Rogers, first (Mr; Hodges’ prize): Mrs R. Ching. seconc iMrs Taplin’s prize).

After a short speech by the Presiden the afternoon's proceedings closed wit! the National Anthem.
