TRADE DISCUSSIONS
BRITAIN AND GERMANY MAY BE RESUMED WHEN TENSION EASES t British Official Wireleaal RUGBY’, 9th May. The President of the Board of Trade, Mr Oliver Stanley, was asked in the House of Commons to-day if, in view of Herr Hitler’s declaration that he desires a peaceful evolution of European tension, he was proposing a resumption of the trade discussions with Germany.
Mr Stanley replied that the trade discussions had to be interrupted as a result of European tension produced by Germany’s annexation of Bohemia and Moravia. “Whenever this tension abates, I shall be only too glad to see the discussions resumed with a view to improving trade relations between Britain and Germany.” Answering a further question regarding the trade negotiations with Rumania, Mr Stanley said that, as the negotiations were still in progress, he was not in a position to make a statement, but the matter was being expedited as far as possible and he hoped that a statement would be possible in a short time.
