DUNEDIN TRAM DISPUTE
THREATENED STRIKE AVERTED GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION I United Pr«##. imipiaiiont DUNEDIN. This Day A stoppage of all city trams was threatened for 9 o’clock last night following a dispute over a new timetable, but at the last moment the union intimated that the stopwork meeting had been abandoned for the tramways com* mitee to meet the men this morning. U is understood that the delicate I situation was averted as a result of departmental intervention. During the afternoon Mr Hunter of the Labour Department. Wellington, arrived by plane, conveying a message from the Minister i Mr P. C. Webb, that the Government would view gravely persistence in the I strike intention, but the Government was prepared to do what it could for the men. 1 The union's grievance is that the new service is too fast, increased motor traffis preventing the cars running to time, and also giving no spare time between runs and cutting down the mealtime. Mr Hunter will attend the meeting this morning.
