NELSON CENTRE CHAMPION RINK MAIT-AI ( LI B TEAM SUCCESSFUL I PIPER BEATS EDEN IN FINAL i The Nelson Bowling Centre’s cham- ! pion of champoins rinks competition i which had been held over since 4th i March, was brought to a conclusion on | the Nelson green on Saturday, j The semi-final game was played in I the morning between Nelson and Maii tai rinks. The latter (Piper) had a j comfortable win over his opponent (W. j Dee). j In the afternoon Maitai met Wakej field in a final game. The former had a distinct advantage up to the 16th end when the scores were: Maitai 16. Wakefield 7. In the three following ends Wakefield made a good recovedy. scoring seven additional points. Maitai then led by two. On the 20th end Wakefield had two shots in an excel- . lent position and on a long head. How- ! ever. Piper, with his first bowl, made a splendid save, beating the two. This practically settled the game, there being only one head to go. The Wakefield skip (G. Eden) secured two, leaving Maitai the champions by a score of 18 to 16. The winning rink was composed of Leggatt. W. Watson. A. J. Stringer, and G. E. Piper (s). Maitai Club. Runners-up: A. E. Shuttleworth, J. W. Ching. J. T. Eden, and G. Eden (s), Wakefield Club. There were numerous spectators, the game creating much interest. Mr A. H. Crawley. President of the Centre, congratulated the winners, and also paid a compliment to Wakefield for its splendid effort. He presented Mr Piper with the Nelson Club's Jubilee Cup. which the Maitai Club will hoid for the ensuing year. Cheers were given for both rinks and Messrs Piper and Eden replied. GENERAL NOTES The Nelson Club has closed its top green and the levels have been taken disclosing a rather “in and out” surface. Top-dressing will bo gone on with at once. As soon as this is completed the lower green will undergo similar treatment. On Anzac afternoon (25th) there will be a full rink tournament. Inspector Martin, who skipped the i T niled (Christchurch) rink at Easter has written to Mr Crawley a complimentary letter, and expressed the pleasure his rink derived from the visit to Nelson He anticipates a return to Nelson next year. Recentlv the Nelson Club made an appeal to debenture holders to render further help to the Club by either cancelling their holdings or giving the Club an extension of five years in which to make a possibility of payment. At a meeting of the committee it was pointed out that the commitments of the Club were so great as to make payment on the due date (December. 1940) impossit'e. and the step mentioned was taken as a possible method of relieving a very heavy liability. The Club wish to thank those who have responded, over £250 being accounted for.
