WANDERERS V. HUIA FRIENDLY MATCH On Saturday afternoon a friendly match was played at Rugby Park, between Wanderers and Huia, the latter being the winners by ten points to nil. Both teams entered enthusiastically into the game, which constituted the opening leg stretcher for the season. A number of new players to the district have joined the ranks of the respective teams, and it is hoped that their advent will be the means of improving the standard of football in the. Motueka area. In the first half of the game most of the attacking was undertaken by Wanderers, who on several occasions had their opponents hard on defence. W. Dennett, G. Trewavas and M. Cederman in turn broke through but were unable to finalise. Early in the second spell Carruthers, in a solo effort, went in to register the opening try for Wanderers. Wanderers, 3-0. Huia retaliated and, in a scramble near the line Newman dived over to equalise the scores. Huia, 3-3. The Huia forwards swept up field again for McEachen to battle his way through the defenders for a try. Huia, 6-3. Midfield play was followed by Huia, conceding ground and from a scrum in the home 25 K. Bourke went over to score. W. Dennett added the extra points. Wanderers, 8-6. B. Fry obtained a mark in Wanderers’ territory and narrowly missed with the kick, Huia continued to press, the ball travelling to Forbes, who potted a goal from a handy position. Huia, 10-8. Mr N. Holyoake acted as referee.
