NELSON BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING NEW SCHOOLS, ADDITIONS AND SITES PROPOSED EXTENSIONS TO TAHUNANUI GROUNDS The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board held to-day was attended by the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (chairman), Messrs J. H. Harkness, F. A. Hamilton, F. A. Carling, H. Barltrop, J G. Wilkens, and F. Newman. Mr F. V Knapp was excused from attendance owing to his absence in the North Island. Accounts amounting to £11,720 4s 6d were passed for payment. NEW SCHOOL AT ARIKI In connection with the proposed new school at Ariki the board decided to adhere to its formed decision, and to ask the Public Works Department to erect the new building as soon as possible on the old Glengarry site. OLD CHURCHILL SCHOOL It was decided that representations be made to the Education Department for the disposal of the old Churchill school for the sale of the old building to the residents. DOVEDALE NEW RESIDENCE The urgency of the necessity of accepting a tender for the erection of a new residence at Dovedale is lo be stressed on the Department. LOWER MOUTERE RESIDENCE The lender of Mr P. B. Calder is to be recommended to the Department for the erection of a new teacher’s residence at Lower Moutere. It v/as resolved to make representations to the Department to have the old Lower Moutere residence condemned, and that the new building be erected on a new site if the proposed property can he acquired. REEFTON COMMERCIAL CLASSES The question of providing additional accommodation at Reefton was held over for consideration until the next meeting. In connection with Reefton it was decided: “That the board was surprised at the position disclosed at Reefton in connection with the commercial course, and expects early advice of the complete reorganisation of the time table to accord with the wishes and needs of the district.” MURCHISON REMODELLING The Murchison committee requested the board to again consider a request for the erection of a new school. It was decided to reply that the board regretted it could not place Murchison on tl\e rebuilding list, but that it adhered to its previous decision and request the architect to prepare plans for remodelling the building. RICHMOND INFANT ROOM It was decided to make representations to the Minister of Education for a grant for the remodelling of the Richmond infant classroom. SEDDONVILLE NEW SCHOOL It was decided to make representations for a grant for a new school at Seddonville.

EXTENSION OF TAHUNANUI GROUNDS A report was presented by Mr Barltrop on behalf of a sub-committee recommending the purchase of additional playing area for the Tahunanui school grounds. The board adopted the recommendation, and representations are to be made to the Department to make the proposed purchase. Members agreed that the Tahunanui school would grow fairly quickly, and that it was desirable to make provi* rion for extra playground space. TAKAKA SCIENCE LABORATORY The chairman is to interview the Department concerning a grant for a new sicence laboratory for the Takaka District High School. UPPER MOUTERE RESIDENCE The chairman was asked to interview the Minister in regard to a grant for a new teacher’s residence at Upper Moutere. WESTPORT NEW SITES It was decided to thank the Westport Borough Council for its assistance in the purchase of new sites by the board at Westport. REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS The Birchfield committee was granted £2O towards ground improvements and fencing. The question of the enlarging of the sitting-room at the Murchison residence was held over until the next meeting. The Ranzau committee was granted £9 10s towards ground improvements. In connection with a request for the erection of new fencing at Richmond the Department wrote stating that the cost should be borne by the board’s maintenance fund. It was decided to ask the architect to report on the provision of new gates.

The Tasman committee was granted £6 5s for incidental expenses. In regard to Tasman ground improvements the Public Works Department intimated that the improvement works authority had been cancelled on account of the fact that no labour was available. The board decided to write to the Department stating that labour would shortly be available, and asking for reconsideration of the matter in view oi that fact.
