OBITUARY

MR C. J. J. FAIRHALL The passing of a highly respected resident, Mr C. J. J. Fairliall, suddenly at his residence, liapaura, came as a great shock t<- his widow, family, relatives and many friends. He was the third eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs E. Kairhall (Woodbourne) and was born at Upper Spring Cieek (now Rapaura) in October, 1864, living in the district all lii s life. He was educated at State S.C. School under the late Mr J. Squires and later at the Uatholic School, Blenheim, under the late Mi Joseph Ward. On leaving school m 1677, he helped his father on S.L*. farm and also on Junction farm (known now as Ih uneJog). In those days the latter was toitois, raupo and flax and lie could tell many amusing stories of how lie and his brothers used to go after the stock. In 1d66 his lather bought Woodhourne estate and went there to reside and lie continued to help at S.C. and Woodbourue " i 1d93 when lie married Miss E. L. Da vis- Goff, Ren wick, living in the old home till 1910. when he sold to his brothel and bought the present home. Ihe late Mr tairhall endeared himself l ■ many by his quiet, unassuming nature He was known for many kind deeds al "ays performed quietly and with only the knowledge of a few friends. Much sym pathy expressed for the bereaved wid iw and family who have ben the recipients oi numerous sympathetic messages, from u:l parts oi New Zealand. Ihe family left to mouru the loss are: Mrs David McCallum (Farnham, Bleu helm), Miss M. Fanhall. (Wellington), and Mi C. Fairhall (Rapaura. Blenheim). There are two grand children, Mr lan Me « ad urn, (Rapaura. Blenheim), and Mrs Lv L Rutherford (Gladstone, Blenheim j, and urn- great grand daughter, Miss D. Fair hall, ( Wood bourne) and Mrs G. Leighton (Fairhall, B.D.J are sisters while the brothers are Mr George Kairhall, (Woodbournei, Mr Leonard Fairhall (Grovetownj and Mr William Fairhall (Rapaura). Two brothers. Messrs Austin and Louis arc de ceased. Hie late Mi Fairlial. was a past meinbei of tbe old S.C. School Committee, and lift member of Marlborough Collie Dog Trials, Marlborough A. and P. Association, Marlborough Trotting Club, and Marlborough Ploughing Match AssociaUon, lie being a very keen member of the latter. The interment took place al Massacre Hill. Tua Marina, followed by a large number of relatives and friends from all paits of Marlborough. The pall bearers were; Messrs Noel, Russell and Wilfred Fairhall, D. McCallum, L. Rutherford and .1 Farnell., assisted by Messrs S. Jackson, W. Hammond. J. Walsh, Ray Gifford, W. iee, W. Odwyer.
