GERMAN CREW

TWELVE MEMBERS ABSENT HAMBCEO-AMEBICA STEAMER j| UNABLE TO SAIL jw C AUCKLAND, 13th April. The absence shortly before sailing time to-night of 12 members —evactly 1 a quarter—of the entire complement of, - the Hamburg-Amerika steamer Dort- . mund. prevented her scheduled depar- ] ture from Auckland for Sydney. Fourji of the men returned to the ship, some: visiting the wharf allegedly under the' impression that she had sailed, and the steamer moved to the stream at a late, ■ hour. It is hoped to dispatch the Dort- j; mund in the morning. The Dortmund, which carries a full! German crew of 48 officers and men. has been discharging cargo from the United States on the New Zealand coast, and completed to-day at Auckland, being scheduled to sail about 8 j o’clock to-night for Australia. While she was at New Plymouth last week a boy failed to report at sailing time for Auckland. Two men left the ship here on Monday, a further two ab- j sented themselves on Tuesday evening,] and the remaining seven were missing this afternoon and to-night. The total absentees to-night were two sailors, four boys, five trimmers and one steward, on each of whom a £IOO bond would have had to be deposited i before the Dortmund could have | cleared port. An extensive search resulted in four trimmers returning at intervals during the night, and shortly after 11 p.m. the steamer was moved to an anchorage in the stream. It is considered that the Dortmund can sail if two of the remaining eight missing men are found, and the search will be continued. “A pretty girl is a real tonic.” states an essayist. Well, most of the young 1 men we know are ready to take their medicine. r The ticket inspector, during his tour ’ of the train, came across an old lady 1 who had made a mistake. "I’m sorry, i madam,” he said, “your ticket is for - Cork. This train is going to Galway." i “My goodness!" she exclaimed. “Does 3 the driver know he’s going in the wrong direction.”
