MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL ACCEPTANCE OF TENDERS CLEARING OF EVES VALLEY STREAM The monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council held to-day was attended by Councillors J. Corder (chairman), R. Teece, H. Everett, L. A. Higgins, E. Harrison Jones, J. Murcott, G. Manson, J. Pugh and W. Martin. Accounts amounting to £3OBO were passed for payment. Total expenditure on main highways 1938-39 to March, was as follows Stoke, £37 19s 9d; Appleby, £349 12s Id; Waiiti, £672 16s sd; Motupiko, £1560 4s; Wangapeka, £1374 16s 8d; Dovedale, £1553 5s Id; Motueka, £357 2s 9d; Moutere, £2826 2s 4d; State highways, £7l 12s 6d; total, £9003 12& 7d.

The Council thanked Mr C. Silcock for allowing the removal from his property of filling for Hall’s culvert. A vote of thanks was also passed to Mr A. Newman for giving a piece of land for improving a corner on the Mount Heslington road.

Arising out of the Engineer’s report a discussion took place on the clearing of Eve’s Valley stream and it was decided that in the event of Messrs A. K. Palmer and A. G. Moore not agreeing to the terms of the Council’s resolultion in March, the Engineer be authorised to carry out the work as advised by the county solicitor.

On the recommendation of Councillor Everett it was decided to erect a street light at a corner near the Mntueka beach.

A request for a street light opposite the War Memorial at Wakefield was declined.

The Council decided to advise the Employment Department-that the Council was willing to continue the employment of No. 13 scheme men on the present basis. The action of the Engineer in ending the employment of the men engaged at the Baton was en dorsed by the Council. < TENDERS The following tenders were accepted. Gentle Annie Creek bridge (Dove* dale): Messrs Steer and Christian £670 (two tenders). Supply of bridge timber; Thomas Bros., Belgrove (five tenders), j Gravelling Tadmor-Tapawera road (600 yards): R. A. Higgins, 4s per yard (two tenders). CORRESPONDENCE In reply to a letter from the Public Works Engineer it was decided to advise that the Council was willing for the secretary of the Hills Fruitrgowers’ Union to inspect the plans in connection with the survey of the proposed MapuaRabbit Island-Nelson road, and that the Engineer would give any information asked for. HIGHWAYS BOARD’S VISIT The Main Highways’ Board advised that it would visit Nelson and that the County Council would have an opportunity of placing requests before the board on the 26th April. It was decided to request the board to declare the Brightwater-Waimea West road as a main highway; that the question of footpaths on State highways be discussed; and that the board be asked for information concerning its future policy regarding the sealing of State highways.
