WOMEN’S DIVISION SUCCESSFUL GLADIOLI SHOW lFrom Our Own Correspondent] The first flower show to be staged by the Motueka Women’s Division, although not on a large scale, proved i quite a successful undertaking, and the beautiful display of gladioli, dahlias and other summer flowers attracted a large number of garden enthusiasts to the W.D. Hall on Friday afternoon and evening. In spite of cold boisterous weather conditions experienced recently some excellent blooms, particularly in the gladioli section, were exhibited by Mrs S. B. Canavan, who judged the decorative section, said the work was most artistic and a great credi* to all exhibitors. In practically all classes there were large numbers of entries and the work of each competitor was so good that it was difficult to determine the winners in some cases. She wished special mention made of the class for vase of 12 assorted flowers. There were again many entries and this was a beautiful display. Throughout the show the arrangement of flowers was very good. Mr G. H. Budden was the judge of j the gladioli, dahlias and other flowers; and he considered that among the gladioli, especially, there were some excellent exhibits. The champion bloom—a splendid specimen of Miss New Zealand was shown by Mr F. Plum, of Nelson. In the class, 3 spikes, the winner exhibited Tasman, Miss New Zealand and Rangatira, the Tasman, raised by Mr Julyan, Blenheim, being outstanding. Mr Frank Foster’s Picardy was also a fine bloom. The winning six were Southport, D. A. Hay, Ronga, Pfitzer’s Triumph and Mrs E. J. Toom. Mr Stewart’s Primulinus and Mr Canavan’s seedlings were very fine specimens. Mr Canavan’s Daily Mail and first place in the dahlia class with Mr Reg. Rowling a close second with Claracarder. First place in 3 giant decorative also went to Mr Canavan with Mrs D. Black, Claracarder and Major Messerbey. Cactus dahlias were not quite up to standard being too early in the season. Among the miscellaneous flowers were some large heads of hydrangeas. Members of the Gardening Circle, with their capable leader, Mrs D. W. Talbot, who were principally responsible for all arrangements in connection with the show, are to be congratulated on the results; also Mrs L. Inwood, who had in hand the secretarial duties. A fine exhibition of pansies, grown by Miss Everett, and a display of petunias by Mrs Stewart proved of much interest to flower lovers, also a doule gypsophiki shown by Mrs E. Wendleborn.
