SHOOTING OF ARAB AT JAFFA
SENTENCE ON CONSTABLES COURT OF APPEAL DECISION lU l'A.-l<v Electric Telegraph—Copy riahtl (Received 27th January, 10.30 a.m.) JERUSALEM, 26th January. The Court of Appeal reduced Constable Wood’s sentence to eight months’ imprisonment, and Constables P. and J. Crossley's sentence was quashed.
A cablegram received from Jerusalem on 12th January stated: —A special Court convicted four British plainclothes constables who were charged with unjustifiably killing an Arab, whom they allegedly shot dead while he was attempting to escape from prison. William Wood was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for attempted manslaughter; J. Mansell, f/r an attempt to do bodily harm, was sentenced to imprisonment for one year: P. Crossley and J. Crossley (who are not related) were bound over for a year at Jaffa. The defence pleaded that all the police regulations regarding escapees were observed. Wood and Mansell appealed against their conviction.
