HAWKSWORTH WINS MEN’S SINGLES FERKINS EASILY DEFEATED I United Pienß Association! MASTERTON, 24th January. Brilliant tennis was witnessed in the North Island championships, which were j practically concluded on the Masterton 1 club’s courts to-day. The games are be- j ing played in conjunction with the Wai- j ’ rarapa association’s championships and j ■ handicap events. Beautiful sunshine again I favoured the tournament, and the gallery j was one of the largest seen in Masterton ; for a considerable time, r To win the men’s singles title, P. Hawksworth (Masterton) played magnifi- . cently, completely outplaying R. McL. i Ferkins, who was made to look like a novice. Throughout the tournament > Hawksworth played tennis the like of ; which he has not shown before, and by , virtue of his speed and terrific forehand [ drives he was never headed at any stage I in the three sets, which lie won 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 In the semi-finals his win over G. A. Pearce was even more clear-cut, the score . being 6-1, 6-0. Neither opponent looked • like winning at any time. ; 'The Ferkins brothers were in excellent form in the men’s doubles, scoring a good , win over K. W. Dyer and S. Painter, 6-3, . 6-2 As a spectacle, however, the semifinal was better than the final, and the gallery was kept in tense excitement. A great duel was fought between Miss . M Glenny and Mrs G. Cotterill, the form, e* winning the women's singles championship, 8-6, 7-5. F. VV.
