BRITISH BARLEY PRICES

POSITION OF GROWERS £1,000,000 SUBSIDY LIKELY

The position of the barley growers has been causing considerable speculation in British Government circles. In East Anglia particularly Ministerialists have been concerned over the position of farmers affected by the present barley prices. Proposals for a Government grant to barley growers on an acreage basis is being considered. It is considered likely that a subsidy amounting to almost £1.000,000 will be proposed by the Government to restore the position of the barley growers. Discussions continue in Cabinet circles on the advisability of the creation of a cereals commission which would take into consideration not only the barley-growers’ position, but that of wheat growers and others who are affected. This commission would be the Government’s way of solving the problem which has been presented in its most acute form by the barley growers, and it is likely that such a solution will commend itself to Government agricultural supporters.
