RIOTING IN LONDON CINEMAS

Rioting occurred in many London cine, ina during demonstrations against giving 10 per cent, of the night’s gross receipts of theatres, cinemas, and circuses to the Baldwin Refugee Fund. Organised groups shouted, “Winter relief for the unemployed 1 Britain’s charity should begin at home.’’ During the showing of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s film appealing for refugees, demonstrators held up traffic in Piccadilly. Several arrests were made during scuffles in the Fast End. Cinemas were picketed and several screens were pelted during the Archbishop's address.
