GAY PUBLIC GARDENS

fine array of blooms MASSES OF COLOUR The public gardens at present are gay with splashes of pink. red. gold and blue, and well repay a visit. On entering Anzac Park by any gate one gains a striking impression of neat lawns broken by bright beds —here the deep blue of balcony blue petunia or tha pink of the other petunia, massed in close array: there the gold and orange of tall marigolds enclosed by the darker dwarf variety. The snapdragons are especially fine, rearing their tall spikes in many rich and delicate colours. Backed by zinnias and surrounded by small blue and white border plants, or massed against the fence with stocks, they are equally effective. Stocks and petunias, and dahlias and zinnias also make pleasing combinations. In spite of the strong winds the phlox drummondii are standing up well and present a fine sight. Red and pink graniums are employed separately in beds that contrast with the blue petunias ; nd gold marigolds. A bed of small fuchsia bushes is rather an unusual sight. A walk round the paths of the Queen’s Gardens also reveals many pretty glimpses of colour, both in the mass and in contrasting rows. Here again, blue arid pink petunia vie with golden marigolds near the eastern gate, while a large bed of zinnias, as yet not fully out, gives promise of a beautiful show later. Neat borders of lobelia and other small plants set off many of the beds to advantage. Phlox and snapdragons are also blooming well in various parts of the garden.
