FIRST DIRECT CALL
RADIO-TELEPHONE SERVICE AUSTRALIA TO AMERICA (Received 22nd December, 9.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, 21st December. The Minister of External Affairs, Mr W. M. Hughes, to-day inaugurated the first direct radio-telephone service between Australia and the United States of America. Mr Hughes spoke with Mr F. B. Sayre, Assistant Secretary of State, in Washington and with the Australian High Commissioner in London, Mr Bruce, who is at present visiting America. Sir Harry Brown, Australian Director of Postal Services, conversed with Mr F. McNigh, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, and editors of various American newspapers. He also conducted conversations discussing the weather and the Christmas festivities.
