NELSON WEST TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

CHRISTMAS PARTIES | There was a large attendance of members and visitors at the Nelson | West Townswomen's Guild Christmas ; party. The Oddfellows’ Hall which had 1 been artistically decorated presented a I gay scene. After the singing of the Guild’s Ode and the reading of the Aspiration, Mrs Gutsavel (president) extended a welcome to all members and their friends; also to those representatives from the different Women’s Institutes and Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and a member from the Palmerston North Guild. The Musical Circle sang the carol, "Silent Night.” This was followed by a very pretty item, “Rendezvous.” Mrs Noel Watson was the soloist with Mrs U. West and Mrs Heath dressed as shepherd and shepherdess dancing to the strains of the song and Miss Barbara Hartly as the gardener “Who passes by and never knows. The Little Shepherd now is holding fast, the Shepherdess’s Marble Rose." A short play followed, “Pride goeth before a fall.” Those taking part were Mesdames Bray, Heather, Stewart and Shale.. A dainty afternoon tea followed, also the cutting of a beautiful Christmas cake. The second half of the programme consisted of selections from comic opera; rendered by the members of tha Musical Circle, who were dressed as country girls, doing the country dance "Gathering Peacods” and singing all the choruses (with actions) to the soloists who were Mesdames Stewart, Thomas, Hastie and Miss Ho watt. A duet, “Boy and Girl” was sung by Mrs Hastie and Miss Howatt and “Crinoline” (song and dance) was very daintly j rendered by Mrs Heath, i The National Anthem brought a very happy afternoon to a close. COMBINED CIRCLES ! The combined circles held their ! Christmas party in the Rechabite Hall. Mrs Gustavel presided and thanked all circle leaders and members for their loyal co-operation; especially those who helped with the entertaining and decorations at the Oddfellows’ Hall. The following programme then followed, “The carol "Silent Night” by choir; recitations by Mrs U. West; songs, Mrs Stewart; duet, Mesdames Quinney and Conibear: recitations,. Miss Sonia Charters; humorous dia-: logue, Mrs Hastie. Afternoon tea was daintily served by the members of the Handicraft Circle. Prizes were then presented to the Bridge Circle winners for the season: Mrs Heather being Ist; Mrs Sherwood, 2nd and Mrs Temple receiving the consolation prize. Games and competitions followed, the winners being Mrs Condell. Miss Charters and Mrs Bray. The Guild now goes into recess until the first Friday in March. Special thanks are due to Mrs U. West who so kindly gave her services to the training of the chorus and soloists in actions and dance of the comic opera selections.
