NELSON CENTRE ANNUAL MEETING GROWTH OF INTEREST COM- 1 MENTED ON | NATIONAL LEARN-TO-SWIM” CAMPAIGN At the annual meeting of the Nelson centre of the N.Z. Amateur Swimming Association this week, there were present: Mr F. E. Boulton (president), Miss jE. Stewart (Nelson Ladies' Club), Messrs H. Frank (Local Officer), J. E. R. Paterson (Nelson College), B. W. Lane (Educational Officer), J. Wade (Murchison), W. Wilson (Nelson Men’s Club), and A. F. Bolam (hon. secretary). Apologies were receifed from Mr M. A. Nightingale (Blenheim Men’s), and Mr E. R. Coote (Blenheim Ladies’). Mr Boulton referred to the activities of the past season. Mainly as a result of tne “Learn-to-Swim Week” campaign in December, and the New Zealand Junior and Intermediate Championships in January, a rapid growth of interest in swimming had been shown throughout the centre’s district. On the motion of Mr Wade, seconded by Miss Stewart, the report and balance sheet were adopted. The secretary was accorded a vote of thanks for his work in connection with the annual report. In referring to the balance sheet which showed a credit balance of £23. Mr Boulton pointed out that the year's working had shown a loss of £l6 13s 2d. The New Zealand Junior and Intermediate championship meetings resulted in a profit of £8 9s 9d. The balance on hand represented £l4 in the educational account and £9 in the general account. CLUB RETURNS Club returns, together with annual reports and balance sheets, were received from the following clubs: Nelson Amateur Swimming Club, Nelson Ladies’ Club, Nelson College Club. Blenheim Women’s Club, Blenheim Club. Murchison Club. The secretary reported that the membership of the affiliated clubs showed an increase of 124 members over the figures of the previous season. The balance sheets showed a marked improvement in the financial position of the majority of clubs?. ELECTION OF OFFICERS The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Mr F. E. Boulton; vice-president, Mr B. W. Lane; delegate to N.Z. Council, Mr J. R. Buchanan; hon. secretary, Mr A. F. Bolam; hon. treasurer, Mr J. Wade; local officer, Mr H. Frank; educational officer. Mr M. Marks; handicapper, Mr F. E. Boulton; auditor, Mr R. Newman; executive, president, secretary, and Mr E. R. Coote; official coaches, Messr., A. F. Bolam and M Marks. NOTICE OF MOTION In accordance with the notice of motion previously circularised, the secretary moved: “That the centre makes an annual levy on all clubs of 6d for each junior and intermediate member, and Is for each senior members, these capitation fees to be placed in a special championship touring fund.” The motion was seconded by Mr Boulton and carried. The matter of appointing various standing committees was left over until the next meeting. NATIONAL "LEARN-TO-SWIM” CAMPAIGN” The secretary reported that a great deal of correspondence had been received in connection with the huge “Learn-to-Swim” campaign, which is to be conducted throughout the country this summer.

On the motion of Mr Boulton, seconded by Mr Bolam, it was resolved to hold a meeting of all persons interested on Thursday. Bth December, for the purpose of forming a district committee. It was decided also to circularise other organisations asking for their cooperation, and if possible the appointment of a representative to be present at the meeting. SWIMMING BATHS AT WAKEFIELD Correspondence was received from the Wakefield Domain Board asking for further information concerning the constructing of a swimming bath, 75ft x 30ft, also details regarding costs. It was resolved that, as the N.Z. Council was preparing a report setting forth requirements for approved swimming pools for the teaching of children and for general purposes, together with suitable plans, the centre forward the letter to the N.Z. Council asking the council to report on the matter APPLICATION FOR CARNIVAL The action of the executive committee in granting the Blenheim Amateur Swimming Club permission to conduct a carnival on 3rd December was approved. Centre meetings were fixed for the third Thursday in the month.
