; Mr Young joined the Post and Telegraph Department at Winton, Southj land, in 1902, and two years later was i transferred on promotion to Invercargil. Between 1910 and 1914 he served in the Wellington, Napier and Timaru offices. Shortly after the oubtreak of the : Great War in 1914 he joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, leaving with the Sixth Reinforcements and returning to the Dominion four years later with the rank of captain. He served in several theatres of war. including the Gallipoli Peninsula. Egypt. France and Belgium. On resuming duty with the department in 1919, Mr Young took up a position in Greymouth, and one year later he was appointed inspector. In 1931 he was advanced to the position !of senior inspector, and, after serving three years in this capacity, was appointed deputy-chief inspector, taking up duty in the administrative division of the General Post Office. One of Mr Young’s first duties on coming to Wellington was that of departmental representative on the tour of New Zealand by the Duke of Gloucester in j 1934-35. Mr Young was appointed ' Second Deputy Director-General early in 1937, and since the retirement of Mr Shanks in August he has acted as Deputy Director-General. He is well known throughout the Dominion, and during his career in the department has been identified with all branches of the service. Joining the department in Dunedin lin 1901, Mr Newall became a tele- ; graphist, being stationed in Bal- | clutha, Napier, Wellington, and Hast- | ingr.
