A GREAT WORK
THE RARNARDO HOMES ANNUAL APPEAL i Dr. Barnardo’s Homes are entering upon their 73rd year of work for destitute children, and in that period they have admitted over 122.500 boys and girls. Every one of that number was destitute, without a chance till the Homes gave it. When Dr. Barnardo founded his work in 1866 he made it his aim that every destitute boy and girl should have a chance in life, a chance to grow up under happy conditions. Why should any be penalised just because they were destitute of friends? He would be their father and friend, and became known as “the father oC nobody’s children.” This ideal of Dr. Barnardo has never been set aside and to this day no destitute child is ever refused admission. These boys and girls have been cared for and trained to take their places in the world as self-supporting members of the community, and 98 per cent, have turned out well. Nearly 31,000 have been migrated to the British Dominions. Barnardo’s is therefore an Empire Charity, and seeks the support of the Empire to continue its great work. The fulfilment of Dr. Barnardo’s Charter means that a great family has constantly to be supported—a family which equals a town in size—B.2oo boys and girls, and on an average five children are received every day. The bills for this enormous family are naturally heavy. The children need feeding, clothing, medical attention, housing, teaching and training, to fit them for life. The Homes therefore make their an-' nual appeal for help at the Christmas | season towards the maintenance of their great family, and they make this appeal with every confidence that friends overseas as well as in the Homeland will rally to their assistance to enable them to continue to train the nation's needy little folk. To help this work is to make a valuable contribution to the Empire’s good. Gifts should be sent to the Headquarters of the work at 18/26 Stepney Causeway. London. E l, England.
