SAFETY ON THE ROADS
SUPPORT FOR NEXT WEEK S CAMPAIGN COMMENDED BY MINISTER Appreciation of the support accorded the road safety campaign was expressed by the Munster of Transport, Mr Semple. He said the thanks of the whole community were due to the local bodies and other organisations for the enthusiasm with which they were organising the “Road Safety Week” commencing next Sunday. Letters and telegrams had reached the Transport Department from all over New Zealand offering co-opera-tion and assistance. The Minister said that more than 1.000,000 leaflets. 10,000 posters* 40,000 window notices, 30.0CX) windscreen stickers, and several millions of calico strips for lorries were being distributed. “1 am very grateful," said Mr Semple, “to the shopkeepers Hiid petrol station owners for their offers to distribute these materials. It is only by their co-opera lion that the ‘Road Safety Week’ can succeed on a national scale. Mr Semple said that competitions in connection with the week were being run in different centres. In Christchurch substantial prizes were being offered for a pedestrian poster. Prizes were also being offered in various centres for fancy drosses featuring road safety, for the best floats in the processions and for the best shop window display. Publicity materials were being despatched from various parts of New Zealand to reach every county, every city, and every borough not later than Thursday night, Ist December. He suggested to local bodies that Friday, 2nd December, should be the road safety distribution day for the whole of New Zealand.
